I grew up in San Jose, CA. My mother had a friend who was a school teacher who donated books to the migrant farm workers. One day I went with her and the memory of that experience has stayed with me—the living conditions were appalling.
Years later there was the grape boycott. I was living on Bernal Heights in San Francisco, near a Safeway store. Every grocery store was not buying grapes except Safeway. I had already stopped buying conventional food, and especially not Safeway’s. But I decided to make a special effort to boycott Safeway, which I’ve held up to this day.
