I first was aware of the United Farmworkers Organizing Committee in 1965-66, when I was a student at University of Florida and a member of Gainesville Chapter SDS/SSOC. I helped set up and participated in a support tour of the area south of Lake Okeechobee which was the heart of the effort ... Clewiston, Belle Glade, Pahokee.
When I emigrated to Canada, the UFW followed me after a couple of years! As a member of the St Andrew-St Patrick New Democratic Party I participated in many grape boycott actions in Toronto over a couple of years, 1971-4. I remember the gang of farmworker family students who came up here from California, particularly the organizer, Jessica, and the guitar player Martin, who taught us to sing “De colores” and “Huelga en general”.
