"Backyard Grapes!"

When our three children were small, my husband and I, both of whom supported the grape boycott, were afraid the kids would never have the pleasure of eating grapes, one of our favorite fruits. So, we planted a few grapevines in our backyard, even though the environmental conditions weren’t that great for grape growing. We “harvested” very small crops!
Also, in the 60’s, I worked two days weekly as a substitute teacher for Los Angeles Unified School District, and often taught in elementary schools in San Fernando and Pacoima, where there were heavily Hispanic populations. I would bring with me a well-written, illustrated book for children about Cesar Chavez, and made sure to read it to the class before the end of the school day. I wanted the children to know about this heroic man, and to feel pride in him as “one of their own”!
