"Boycotting Safeway at Age 17"

Boycotting Safeway at Age 17

A high school class in 1971 and reading Grapes of Wrath brought me into contact with UFW.  For a class project, I met with farmworkers in Monterey to learn more about their lives (having grown up in exclusive Marin County).  This in turn lead me to volunteering for UFW the summer of 1971, including marches in Delano and many hours boycotting Safeway so that they would only sell grapes picked by Union Workers.  To this day, I still have a hard time eating grapes, but I continue to admire the work done by UFW over all these years.
