Though I don’t have history with the campesinos, Sr. Chavez has inspired me throughout my life as he stood for the basic rights and decent working conditions for the people who bring the food we eat to our tables. To my mind, that’s a pretty important kind of work and those who do it should always be treated with respect!
Also, something else I very much admire about Sr. Chavez, though it is not well known by the general public, is that he was reportedly an ethical vegetarian. It’s really important to me that we all think about what we eat and use, and try to be as kind as possible and as personally responsible as we can. Not only does a vegetarian diet avoid doing harm to other living beings and keep us healthier than a meat-based diet, it also involves far less harm to the earth we all share, and the land and water and air we all must depend upon to survive. Sr. Chavez knew that and lived as an example to us all. Let’s honor him every day in our lives, and celebrate his life on his Day.
