"Decades without grapes"

Decades without grapes

When I was a teenager in Los Angeles in the early 1970s, I heard there was a grape boycott to support fair working conditions for farmworkers.  I did not buy or eat grapes from then on, until I moved to Humboldt County in 1990.  At the Northcoast Coop, I discovered grapes that were grown in Northern California produced by family farms that were not a part of the boycotted conditions. I continued to boycott commercially grown grapes from “mainstream” stores until I heard that the boycott was over.  I was willing to do without grapes for over 15 years then, even after regular coverage of the boycott was not on mainstream news, and I am willing to do it again, with other farm products, for the sake of fair and safe working conditions for farm workers.
