I was a student at Santa Monica College. M. E. C. H. A. was an active group on campus. I ususally would participate in social events. However, one of my most memorable moments was picketing outside of local liquer stores. However, since then I have been blessed to attend a session at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress where because I had a ticket I was allowed entrance inspite of the incredible long line beyond room capacity for the the guest speaker, Martin Sheen. Again, I was blessed to be able to take my mother to a recent memorial mass for Cesar Chavez at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
It is my understanding, that my grandfather was a farmworker. My husband’s family to this day has relatives who are farm workers. My husband is member of UFCW as well.
The union helps maintain a valuable support system for the hard worker who struggling to spend time with family has little to no time to advocate for his or her own rights. Viva UFW!
