"Grapeless in Paradise"

Grapeless in Paradise

My children didn’t eat grapes for years, stood with me in solidarity with the workers’ cause here in Monterey County. When the UFW was finally victorious, we binged on them regularly.

The quantity of dangerous pesticides now used in this hugely agricultural county is our current target; methyl iodide [“Midas”] was our first target and is no longer used in the U.S. The field workers, their families, the schools and homes and small business bordering the fields are exposed to equally dangerous drift, water, soil and air contamination from methyl bromide, chloropicrin and Telone, which are used in massive quantities as fumigants.  This has to stop.
