"I too was a migrant"

I too was a migrant

I was 16 years old, had been picking cotton & okra ever I was 6 yesrs old. But my eldest brother decided to enlist in the Army and now I seem to understand my Mom, she decided were going up north to work as migrants. I think that was her way of relieving her stress because Juan got sent to Viet Nam.  We went to harvest sugar beets and on Sunday we were all taken to go grocery shopping in Bowling Green, Ohio and the cashier just walked away, I not knowing she was predjudice, I went over to a gentleman standing and asked how long before the would return and he said he would help us because did not speak Spanish, I I told him we all spoke English and he said “you woulndn’t understand.”
Well I didn’t until many times later.
