"I was a farmworker child"

I was a farmworker child

Like many Mexican-American families my family would supplement my Dad’s income from a steel factory in Los Angeles by working on a ranch in Ventura County picking Walnuts in the Fall in the 1950’s and 60’s. The physicalness of the work was hard, even for a kid, so imagine what picking did to those who weren’t, which was just about everybody else. When Cesar’s grape boycott began in the 70’s, there was no question about my support of it. I had been honed an activist by my parents and my solidarity with the causa, as it was called back then, was unassailable.
