"Not Enough"

As I read and think about the movement to gain fair working conditions and decent pay for the people who work to get food on our tables, I realize I have not done nearly enough. In the 1960’s I was growing up in Virginia, and I remember being asked to boycott grapes. We did that as a family, and followed the articles in the papers about the lives of farm workers and their battle for decent treatment. Over the years, I have boycotted a few other farm products for the same reasons.

This past year I have received any emails asking me to sign petitions and write letters to the governor asking him to sign one or several pieces of legislation to improve the circumstances of farm workers. I have always signed those petitions and written the letters to the governor.

As I write this, I wish I had done more. My contribution is hardly worth mentioning, but I write this small statement to remind myself that I need to do more! I plan to use this feeling of failure and shame to motivate myself to do much, much more in the future.
