In 2002, I was running for a State Assembly seat in the Central Valley. Many people told me it was a mistake to march with the farm workers in support of legislation which would require binding mediation when growers refused to negotiate union contracts with farm workers. I was also told that I was the only federal or legislative candidate between Fresno and Sacramento to march with the farm workers in support of this important right. Well, I didn’t win the race, but when I think back on the many good moments from the campaign, one that stands out is walking and talking with many legendary leaders from this great movement during the march that year. I was proud to participate and look forward to great moments in the future with the UFW.
