"Santa Barbara Teachers Supported the UFW"

Santa Barbara Teachers Supported the UFW

In the late 1960’s and 1970’s the Santa Barbara Federation of Teachers, Local 1081,  CFT/AFT, AFL-CIO, on at least two occasions drove trucks of food and clothing to Delano for the Santa Barbara Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO. The local also held fundraisers for the UFW. At the time I was President of Local 1081.

Later in a different role as CFT Field Representative in the Bay Area, I was working with teachers and school workers on strike in the Jefferson High School District (Daly City/Pacifica). The UFW returned the favor by driving a truckload of vegetables to Daly City on a Friday afternoon for the striking employees. The teachers and classified personnel were on strike for nine weeks - complete first quarter of the school year. It was also the longest public employee strike in California history. The UFW displayed solidarity with the school personnel in their time of need.
