In the 1960’s a group of social workers from Social Workers Union, Local 535, SEIU, came up to Delano from Los Angeles to work with striking UFWOC workers, to make sure they were not discriminated against. We helped them understand their rights to social services programs and pursue applications. At that time, SSI was a county welfare program called Aid to Disabled, and one worker qualified as disabled because of severe diabetes. He had not realized how ill he was. Others applied for other programs.
