In 1984 I heard Cesar speak at CSULA about the boycott on grapes. I began a mission to educate family and friends about the boycott using the Wrath of Grapes video. Years later I found myself teaching 3rd grade using a district core literate book called Cesar Chavez y La Causa (a bilingual class). It was then when I realized that the mission became much bigger than the boycott, it was now about LA CAUSA and UFW. The school went through a name change in 1994 from Colmar to Cesar E. Chavez Elementary. In a span of 3 years (1996-1998) over 150 students from this elementary school went to La Paz in Keene Ca. to learn more about the farm workers and visit the grave site. So in 2011 it was great to see pages in a text book (1st grade) write about the farmworkers and Cesar in greater detail then just a sentence or two. Now, I can proudly say, that the whole school learns about La Causa, UFW and Cesar Chavez. It’s a good feeling to know that the future students of Cesar E. Chavez Elementary will learn about the farmworkers and UFW.
