""We don't know that""

Not only were my wife and I boycotting grapes in the 1960s but also our young family—and my mother-in-law, Leota.  Leota lived alone near the Rhode Island beaches.  Her ex-husband’s sister Phoebe, a kind of recluse, lived nearby and often sent her husband to fish at the beach and to bring grapes to Leota.  Leota repeatedly told Phoebe, “we’re boycotting grapes to support the farm workers.”  Phoebe just as repeatedly answered with a typically American cop-out “we don’t know that.”
